A Brand New Flank Steak Recipe

Before my baby boy started school my parents and our family would spend one day a week at their house where we hung out all day and then had dinner together.

Then my little boy started school (sniff, sniff) so we couldn’t do this anymore (I work weekends and so does my mother).

So when summer rolled around we started our weekly dinners again when our schedules allowed it.

This is what we had last time at my parents house…

marinated flank steak [5]One flank steak made enough meat for easily 6 adults.  The marinade comes together in minutes which you can prep earlier in the day.

And can i just say; there is nothing like caramelized onions!!!

We served a Green Salad [6] and a Potato Salad [7] with it; a perfect summer meal 😎

A Brand New Flank Steak Recipe

  • Author: Lisa G [8]
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Description

This flavourful but tough cut of meat is slowly marinated to perfection with deep flavours that cover sweet and salty with a touch of smoke, then grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

½ Cup canola  oil

1/3 Cup sodium-reduced soy sauce

¼ Cup Red wine vinegar

Juice of one lemon

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp salt, plus more

½ tsp pepper, plus more

3 Cloves garlic, crushed

453 g (1 pound) flank steak

½ tbsp butter (I used salted)

4 Large onions, sliced in half moons

Instructions

In a large casserole dish or any dish large enough to hold the steak (you can even use a large Ziploc bag), whisk together the canola oil, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, the ½ salt,1/2 tsp pepper and garlic..

Submerge the steak completely and let it marinate for a minimum of 4 hours, up to 24 hours (in the fridge).

Rotate the steak in the marinade every few hours.

Meanwhile, prepare the Caramelized onions:

Add the butter to a large pan and heat over medium high heat.

When it’s hot and the butter has melted, add the onions and season with salt, mix well ensuring the onions are coated in the butter.

Continue sautéing at this temperature until you see the onions are starting to brown (about 10 minutes).

When the onions are starting to brown, drop the heat to low and allow them to caramelize for about 30 minutes, up to an hour (low and slow).

When you’re ready to grill the steak, remove the steak and shake the excess marinade off of it.

Follow my How to Grill the Best Steak EVER Guide [9].

When the steak is cooked, slice the meat against the grain (opposite of the natural lines you’ll see in the fibre of the meat). This is key to tender Flank Steak.

Top the meat slices with caramelized onion.

Notes

  1. Like my otherMarinated Flank Steak recipe [10]s, there is enough marinade for a larger steak but I’m trying to encourage portion control!
